J.Gill and Company was hired to remove and replace over 15,000 SF of polyurethane traffic coating located at the exterior plaza around the Crystal Gardens at Navy Pier in Chicago. This particular area of the pier is very busy in the warmer months, so the majority of this work needed to be done in the winter. In order to do this, a high performance coating would be needed to allow application in cold weather. The product used was Tremco Vulkem EWS, which allows application at temperatures down to 20 degrees Farenhiet.  Multiple layers of waterproofing & paint were mechanically removed to expose the existing concrete slab. Concrete and sealant repairs, uncovered following the coating removal, were completed prior to the new traffic coating. The last phase of the traffic coating application was completed in December of 2017.

Due to the success of this project, the owner elected to incorporate the EWS material in another problematic area. The mechanical area, located under the Ferris Wheel, experienced leaks due to incorrect slab pitch, resulting in constant standing water. J.Gill corrected this problem by pouring a concrete topping to re-direct any water. The EWS Traffic Coating System was then installed at the entire mechanical system area. .
